چکیده :
آب دريا متشكل از تقريباً 57/96% آب و 5/3% مواد محلول شامل عناصر مختلف است.
جدول(1)نشانگر غلظت استاندارد اين عناصر در آب دريا مي باشد.عناصر تشكيل دهنده آب دريا را مي توان به سه دسته طبقه بندي كرد:سازنده هاي اصلي(Major)،سازنده هاي كوچك(Minor)و عناصر با مقدار بسيار كم(Trace)،سازنده هاي كوچك داراي غلظتي بين 1 تاppm100 هستند.در حاليكه عناصر با مقدار بسيار كم داراي غلظت كمتر ازppm1 مي باشند.

طي برآوردهاي انجام شده اغلب منابع مواد معدني در دنيا تنها براي 150-100 سال آينده كفايت خواهند نمود.
از سوي ديگر،آب دريا منابع عظيمي از مواد معدني را داراست.جدول(2)مواد معدني مهمي كه داراي ارزش اقتصادي هستند را نشان مي دهد.همچنين در اين جدول ذخيره كل جهاني مواد معدني در آبهاي دريا و نيز مقدار توليد مواد معدني در يك واحد نمك زدايي كه يك ميليون گالن آب شيرين در روز توليد مي كند.به همراه مجموع مواد معدني قابل بازيابي از كل واحدهاي نمك زدايي در عربستان صعودي بعنوان مثال نشان داده شده است.
